Volkswagen Polo (02 - 09)
It may not be the most glamorous small car on the market, and it may not be the most exciting car in the world to drive, but that doesn’t make any difference to Irish buyers. They love this as its unfaltering popularity in both the new and used market shows. These are efficient and solid cars that have won over consumers since their introduction because they’re economical, easy to drive and are affordable even when buying new. They’re also popular with learner drivers, and that is why for years to come the Polo is a guaranteed success. It’s a small car, but it has a surprising amount of passenger space. It can hold five (it may be a bit of a squeeze), and the boot is a good size. The rear seats can also fold flat to increase load space. The interior materials are robust and durable, and the design is simple and practical. Everything is easy to use and right at your fingertips. The Polo handles well with good steering and a smooth ride.

• There were some complaints of high oil consumption early on
