Review

Audi A1 (10 - present)

All the big-car makers realise they need smaller, less expensive models in their ranges so they can get younger drivers into their marques. They hope then that those drivers will progress up the model range over the years. That’s what Audi are doing with their A1. This is a supermini in size, yet has a big-car feel to it, with a really upmarket cabin. There is reasonable room and good storage space in the boot. The A1 uses twist-beam rear suspension and McPherson strut front suspension which makes for a comfortable drive. The A1 feels like a premium car on the road too. Audi have done really well here with excellent handling, responsive steering and a supple ride.

Look out for

•  Check suspension is being cared for

What we like

•  Petrol version is smooth and quiet to drive
•  Great handling and grip on corners
•  Stylish dashboard and plenty of gadgets
•  Easy to get in to the back seats compared to other cars of the same class

What we don't like

•  Can be a bit bumpy with the larger wheels and sport suspension
