Review
Fiat Punto (94 - 99)
When it was first introduced in 1994, it was considered to be one of the best small hatchbacks you could get. It definitely stood out amongst any previous Fiat cars. The styling was different, the interior was modernised and the bodywork was galvanised to prevent any corrosion – from which previous Fiats had suffered. The Punto makes an ideal first car for learner drivers, it’s cheap to buy, cheap to tax, easy to drive and the fuel economy is really good. The cabin is spacious and it’s quite refined and comfortable. The engine range is vast, from 1.1-litres to 1.6-litre petrol and there is also a selection of 1.7-litre diesels. Each one is economic and capable particularly the 1.2-litre 86bhp.
Look out for
• Check the brake pipes regularly for corrosion and rust. Also check the downpipe and brackets
What we like
• Distinctive Fiat styling
• It handles and drives extremely well
• Overall it is good value for money
• It won’t cost you fortune to run
• Refined and spacious interior
• Decent boot size; can hold plenty of luggage
• Engines are economical
What we don't like
• Doesn’t have the best reliability record
• Not as exciting to drive as its rivals
• The interior trims feel cheap
