Review

Volkswagen Touran (03 - 10)

This is always on the shopping list of Irish families. It is one of the best people carriers in its class, and it is rarely overlooked despite competing against the likes of the Citroen Grand Picasso, Renault Grand Scenic, and the Mazda 5. The Touran is a great all round car; it’s practical and versatile, doesn’t cost a fortune to buy and keep on the road and is safe. The interior has acres of space; it can carry up to seven and the boot is a decent size. In terms of driving, the Touran does really well. The ride is comfortable, the steering is sharp and the driving position is spot on which gives you that extra bit of confidence behind the wheel. The handling is excellent. There are some great engines in the range; most are vastly improved in terms of CO2 and fuel, particularly the BlueMotion model.

Look out for

•  There are a few blind spots so take extra care when driving

What we like

•  Comes with efficient and economic engines, including the BlueMotion

•  Practicality levels are very high, lots of space inside

•  It scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test

•  Lots of standard equipment and safety features on board

What we don't like

•  Unfortunately it wouldn’t be the most exciting car to drive in its class
